Canaries were commonly used as a warning system in mines. If the bird stopped singing, gas was leaking inside the mine, and it was unsafe to be inside. What ways can birds in our neighborhoods help us understand environmental changes in our community? What ways can we aid birds and the environment in our community by raising the alarm and monitoring change? Participatory science is one way we can help birds, our community and scientists understand the changes happening at the local level. Participatory science is a way to have our voices heard and our presence seen in science. Black communities have been underserved by science, but by monitoring our own communities we can take back our power and be more informed about environmental changes.
Bird-related projects that you can participate in:
🐦⬛eBird - Like to watch birds? Keep track of your list while birding and help scientists understand birds where you are with eBird
🐦⬛Project FeederWatch - Like to feed birds? Get a bird feeder and let scientists know about the birds visiting the feeders in your yard.
🐦⬛Bird House Monitoring - Join a birdhouse monitoring program to build, attract and monitor nesting birds in your neighborhood
🐦⬛Nest Watch - Interested in learning more about bird nests? Sign up for Nest Watch to build a nest box and monitor nesting birds and their behavior.
🐦⬛Resight banded birds - Ever seen an ankle bracelet on a bird? It's one way scientists track bird survivorship. Report your sighting at www.reportband.gov.
🐦⬛Great Backyard Bird Count - Want to help understand birds in your neighborhood? The GBBC is a yearly initiative in February to engage bird enthusiasts to share bird sightings in their neighborhood or backyard patch.
🐦⬛Christmas Bird Count - Want to help understand winter birds in your area? Participate in the Christmas Bird Count, yearly winter-time bird census to understand winter bird populations near you. This type of project helped inform the report that found we have lost 3 billion birds.
🐦⬛Atlas - Check out your state’s wildlife department or office to see if they are doing a bird atlas to understand birds across the state.

It's Day 6 of #BlackBirdersWeek: #CanaryInYourCoalMine. It's also #NationalParrotDay!
Birds use alarm calls to warn each other of threats. How can/do you raise the alarm about environmental issues affecting your community?
No virtual events taking place today, but we will be highlighting the importance of community and participatory science within the Black community as it relates to environmental justice and conservation efforts. Planning Team member, Deja Perkins
@naturallywild__ is an expert on these topics, be sure to follow her and check out her work!
🐦⬛Be sure to also check out her @BirdNote Daily episode, "Deja Perkins on Gaps in Bird Observations."
Tag a Black a community leader whose work focuses on environmental justice, bird conservation, and/or participatory science. Why is this work important to have in the Black community?
We hope you enjoyed our first virtual event of the day, "Talkin' Tweetations!" If you missed it, you can head to our YouTube channel and watch the recording (as with most of our events)!
While we prepare for our next discussion with filmmaker Alicia Crowe, we want to highlight a different #AvianArtivist project: Black Life Outdoors, an upcoming photo book created and curated by photographer Tonya Peele (@heysunflwr) that showcases the diversity of ways in which Black people already enjoy outdoor recreational activities – a perfect way to show that we BEEN out here! Learn more about the project at www.BlackLifeOutdoors.com and look out for the book's release this Juneteenth (June 19).
It's Day 5 of #BlackBirdersWeek: #AvianArtivists. It's also #NationalCreativityDay!
Artists often use their craft to raise awareness of issues they care about. Show us how you use your art to speak for the birds in our #ArtContest!
Join us for two virtual events focused on highlighting Black Creatives and creativity through forms of storytelling.
